The Packaging

So as you know, there is a “paper insert” cover design, a label for the DVD disc, as well as an optional “booklet” component of this project. These pieces should be suited to a typical DVD package, though you can enhance the design as you see fit.

With these two pieces are two considerations:

1. Your project should have a compelling cover that would stand out on the shelf. As we’ve discussed, the cover of the disk can relate to the splash screen, but you may not want to make it “identical.”
2. The interior component should be a “manual” of sorts, in that it will articulate and explain just what this software can do, and what it’s all about.

The measurements for the DVD materials are fairly straightforward — here are the specs:

The sleeve:
10.75 x 7.25 (one-sided, folded with a .5″ spine in the center). You may need two pages together.

The booklet:
7.125 x 9.75 (two-sided, folded in half)

The requirements for the package:

1. The cover should be lively and stand off the shelf — it should be readable from a fair distance
2. The back of the package should build some excitement about what the software can actually accomplish
3. The (optional) interior booklet should contain screen shots, images of tools, windows, etc., and articulate what this software does
   These interior elements should be clear and well laid out, so that an average user could actually figure out how the software really works
4. Don’t forget the design for the actual disk!
   Of course, all of the design elements should also fit into your aesthetic and work with the project. You might use layouts that are based on the aesthetic you’ve developed, or you might find pieces of things that haven’t been used, and put them to work in the booklet.
