Upload a draft PDF of your booklet
AT LEAST TWO PAGES MUST BE DEVELOPED. For the rest of the pages, there can be “sketched” elements and drawings so that all pages have something to show.
FYI: You are responsible to find the dimensions of the record label, the sleeve/holder, and create the Photoshop/InDesign files for them.
Hint: you can do a web search for “7in vinyl record templates.” I found some good templates that way.
7″ Vinyl Record Booklet Production Details
Demo videos provided in CI Learn under Project 03 module. The videos show dimensions for the “CD” booklet so you’ll need to change them to fit the vinyl record booklet, provided below.
Start building your InDesign and Photoshop spreads with the following settings:
InDesign Setup
- In InDesign the setup is easy. Create a new document and begin by selecting the “Compact Disc” preset under the “Print” tab. This will set the stage for incoming artwork from Photoshop.
- Change dimensions for 7″ vinyl record booklet insert to…
- Width: 6.7855in
- Height: 6.7855in
Photoshop Setup
- Because PS doesn’t use bleeds, your canvas dimensions will include them. Here are the exact dimensions you’ll need depending on if you’re creating artwork for a single panel or a two-page spread:
- PS Single Page (Rounded up): 7.036 h x 7.036 w
- PS Two Page Spread (Rounded up): 7.036 h x 13.821
- Once the PS document is set up, you’ll need a way to visualize where the bleeds/crop line will be. To do so, in the menu, select “View > New Guide Layout.” Then set the margin to .125in. This will add a guide all around to represent the crop line (i.e. bleed boundary)
- You are responsible to find dimensions for other parts of the 7in record (e.g. label, and sleeve). Hint: can be found online (Google).
ALSO!
Just what you have been waiting for — your bands have finally locked in their respective sets of lyrics!
Please note the following elements for your production — there are THREE (3) things you must now consider:
- On this page, you will find the lyrics to the three tracks which must be included in your record Booklet (except for one (“Bird” by Pablo Neruda), lyrics are courtesy of the poet Ranier Maria Rilke!). In some cases they may tie directly with your band’s name, in other cases, the connection is not as apparent; your challenge is to lay these out in the booklet — word-for-word. The formatting should also match what is presented here.
- Don’t forget! You must also now include the titles of these tracks on the BACK of the record booklet and/or packaging (depends on your final design).
- Read the lyrics, and now look back at your designs as they are unfolding. The band has requested that SOME elements from the lyrics appear somehow in your design. Naturally, this means you may have to make some creative enhancements to your concept! Be creative — you don’t need to make drastic alterations, but you should be able to explain how these lyrics have played out in your designs. This is part of the challenge in design — how well can you adapt and integrate new issues as they arise…
Here are the lyrics for your bands:

A Walk
My eyes already touch the sunny hill. going far ahead of the road I have begun. So we are grasped by what we cannot grasp; it has inner light, even from a distance- and charges us, even if we do not reach it, into something else, which, hardly sensing it, we already are; a gesture waves us on answering our own wave… but what we feel is the wind in our faces.
Song of the Sea
Timeless sea breezes, sea-wind of the night: you come for no one; if someone should wake, he must be prepared how to survive you. Timeless sea breezes, that for aeons have blown ancient rocks, you are purest space coming from afar… Oh, how a fruit-bearing fig tree feels your coming high up in the moonlight.
Before Summer Rain
Suddenly, from all the green around you, something-you don't know what-has disappeared; you feel it creeping closer to the window, in total silence. From the nearby wood you hear the urgent whistling of a plover, reminding you of someone's Saint Jerome: so much solitude and passion come from that one voice, whose fierce request the downpour will grant. The walls, with their ancient portraits, glide away from us, cautiously, as though they weren't supposed to hear what we are saying. And reflected on the faded tapestries now; the chill, uncertain sunlight of those long childhood hours when you were so afraid.

Bird
It was passed from one bird to another, the whole gift of the day. The day went from flute to flute, went dressed in vegetation, in flights which opened a tunnel through the wind would pass to where birds were breaking open the dense blue air - and there, night came in. When I returned from so many journeys, I stayed suspended and green between sun and geography - I saw how wings worked, how perfumes are transmitted by feathery telegraph, and from above I saw the path, the springs and the roof tiles, the fishermen at their trades, the trousers of the foam; I saw it all from my green sky. I had no more alphabet than the swallows in their courses, the tiny, shining water of the small bird on fire which dances out of the pollen.
Music
Take me by the hand; it's so easy for you, Angel, for you are the road even while being immobile. You see, I'm scared no one here will look for me again; I couldn't make use of whatever was given, so they abandoned me. At first the solitude charmed me like a prelude, but so much music wounded me.
Loneliness
Being apart and lonely is like rain. It climbs toward evening from the ocean plains; from flat places, rolling and remote, it climbs to heaven, which is its old abode. And only when leaving heaven drops upon the city. It rains down on us in those twittering hours when the streets turn their faces to the dawn, and when two bodies who have found nothing, dissapointed and depressed, roll over; and when two people who despise eachother have to sleep together in one bed- that is when loneliness receives the rivers…

The Panther
“His tired gaze - from passing endless bars - has turned into a vacant stare which nothing holds. to him there seem to be a thousand bars, and out beyond these bars exists no world. his supple gait, the smoothness of strong strides that gently turn in ever smaller circles perform a dance of strength, centered deep within a will, stunned, but untamed, indomitable. but sometimes the curtains of his eyelids part, the pupils of his eyes dilate as images of past encounters enter while through his limbs a tension strains in silence only to cease to be, to die within his heart.
Night
Night. O you whose countenance, dissolved in deepness, hovers above my face. You who are the heaviest counterweight to my astounding contemplation. Night, that trembles as reflected in my eyes, but in itself strong; inexhaustible creation, dominant, enduring beyond the earth's endurance; Night, full of newly created stars that leave trails of fire streaming from their seams as they soar in inaudible adventure through interstellar space: how, overshadowed by your all-embracing vastness, I appear minute!— Yet, being one with the ever more darkening earth, I dare to be in you.
Autumn
The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up, as if orchards were dying high in space. Each leaf falls as if it were motioning "no." And tonight the heavy earth is falling away from all other stars in the loneliness. We're all falling. This hand here is falling. And look at the other one. It's in them all. And yet there is Someone, whose hands infinitely calm, holding up all this falling.
Songs featured with the band “Fire”
Fire’s Reflection
Perhaps it‘s no more than the fire‘s reflection on some piece of gleaming furniture that the child remembers so much later like a revelation. And if in his later life, one day wounds him like so many others, it’s because he mistook some risk or other for a promise. Let‘s not forget the music, either, that soon had hauled him toward absence complicated by an overflowing heart…
Black Cat
A ghost, though invisible, still is like a place your sight can knock on, echoing; but here within this thick black pelt, your strongest gaze will be absorbed and utterly disappear: just as a raving madman, when nothing else can ease him, charges into his dark night howling, pounds on the padded wall, and feels the rage being taken in and pacified. She seems to hide all looks that have ever fallen into her, so that, like an audience, she can look them over, menacing and sullen, and curl to sleep with them. But all at once as if awakened, she turns her face to yours; and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny, inside the golden amber of her eyeballs suspended, like a prehistoric fly.
Piano Practice
The summer hums. The afternoon fatigues; she breathed her crisp white dress distractedly and put into it that sharply etched etude her impatience for a reality that could come: tomorrow, this evening—, that perhaps was there, was just kept hidden; and at the window, tall and having everything, she suddenly could feel the pampered park. With that she broke off; gazed outside, locked her hands together; wished for a long book— and in a burst of anger shoved back the jasmine scent. She found it sickened her.
Lastly, a few more type treatments to get you thinking…
